Floating through space in a bubble helmet, a smiling kitten waves one paw, toe beans showing, and holds onto a small rocket with the other hand. The cat has big shiny eyes, whiskers, tabby stripes on its forehead and a curled tail poking out of a puffy spacesuit with a camera-style chest panel. The rocket comes with a round porthole window, side fins and a flame at the bottom. Nearby are a large ringed planet, two smaller ringed planets, a crescent moon and lots of scattered stars in different sizes. Bold outlines and roomy shapes work well for preschoolers and early elementary kids. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big shapes: fill the cat's face and the rocket body with beige and pale gray, leaving the helmet glass and suit white.
- 2Color the rocket's nose cone, side fins and porthole ring in red, then add orange flames at the bottom of the rocket.
- 3Add light blue to the astronaut's backpack sides and chest pack, use deep blue for the backpack, and fill the arm sleeves and boots in sky blue.
- 4Paint the planets and stars: the top planet in orange with amber stripes, the right planet in violet, the bottom-left planet in light blue, and all the stars in lemon yellow.
- 5Add the small details: pink for the paw pads, the mouth and the chest pack's red light, and bright blue for the porthole edges. Keep the eye whites, helmet shine and suit white.
- 6Optional: add a little darker shading under the cat's chin and along the rocket's bottom edge to give everything a bit more depth.
