In the middle of the page sits a smiling mother hen. She has a big scalloped comb, a wattle under her beak, and a fluffy tail fanned out behind her. One chick peeks out from beneath her curved wing, and three more stand close by. One of them looks up at her while the other two face sideways. Little tufts of grass fill the corners and run along the bottom. Bold, clean lines and big rounded shapes keep it simple for younger kids, and the layered wing and tail feathers give older ones something to chew on. Golden yellow suits the chicks, warm reddish-brown the hen, and bright red her comb, with a few shades of green for the grass. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Color the hen's body, wings and the area behind the chicks in chocolate brown.
- 2Fill the big tail feathers at the left side of the hen with caramel tan.
- 3Color the hen's head and neck with cream, leaving the two eye whites bright white.
- 4Color all four chicks, including the small one peeking out from under the wing, in lemon yellow.
- 5Color the hen's comb and wattle cherry red, and the beak golden yellow.
- 6Optional: add a few darker strokes of chocolate brown along the body and tail for a feathery texture, and leave the grass and background white.
