Post Owl Carrying a Letter, Harry Potter Hedwig Style

Diagonally across the page swoops a big-eyed owl with both wings spread wide and a sealed envelope held in its feet. It's a post owl in the Harry Potter mold, much like Hedwig, and the round face, glossy eyes and curved beak make it look friendly. Long, layered feathers build each wing, with little speckled spots near the tips where kids can practice careful strokes and add patterns. The chest and head have soft, feathery texture lines, and the envelope has a folded flap with a few crinkles. Since there's no background, the owl stands out cleanly on the white page. Try snowy white and pale gray on the owl, soft brown or black dots for the speckles, and a warm cream or yellow for the letter. The PDF is free, so print a few extra copies at home. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start by coloring the large cream areas, like the envelope and the main body feathers, using the cream color.
- 2Fill the wings and the face patches with the soft tan color, leaving the eye whites and small highlights on the head white.
- 3Color the wing tips and the dark ends of the feathers with caramel brown, working from the outer edges inward.
- 4Add the tawny orange patch on top of the head and the pale sand accents on the envelope corner and a few wing feathers.
- 5Color the small wax seal on the envelope with golden yellow.
- 6Optional: Add a little extra shading with a slightly darker tone along the edges of the wings and envelope to make them pop.
