Sitting in the grass with its tongue poking out, this happy puppy holds the string of a big heart-shaped balloon in one paw. Its floppy ears, body and tail are cut into patchwork sections of circles, polka dots and horizontal stripes. A flower with leaves stands on each side of the dog, and small tufts of grass fill the bottom corners. Large shapes and open sections are easy for little hands, while the dots and stripes give older kids more to work on. Red or pink would make a great heart balloon, and warm and cool colors can alternate across the striped and dotted patches so each one stands out. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start by coloring the big cream areas: the face, the paw holding the balloon, the front paws, and the striped chest, leaving the cheek highlight and the background white.
- 2Fill the spotted body and back leg with caramel brown, and the front leg and lower arm with light brown, so the puppy's sides look warm and rich.
- 3Color the floppy ears: use caramel brown for the striped ear, and sand beige for the lighter part near the top of the head.
- 4Add the dark brown tail and its base, then shade the tail tip with the same caramel brown.
- 5Paint the balloon knot bright red and the tongue rose pink, then color the three flowers with rose pink petals and golden yellow centers, using lavender for the left flower and sky blue for the small flower on the right.
- 6Optional: Add a little light brown shading along the edges of the cream areas to make the puppy look more rounded.
