Snail and Spotted Mushrooms Among Forest Ferns
Coloring guide
In this detailed scene, a small snail with a spiral shell and two long eyestalks climbs the thick stem of a tall, spotted mushroom. The big cap has round dots in different sizes and finely lined gills underneath. Two medium spotted mushrooms sit on the left and right, a tiny one stands at the bottom, and every stem has a frilly ring. Curling fern fronds with fiddlehead tips frame both sides, and large veined leaves and a few grass blades fill the ground. Clear outlines and a mix of big and small spaces suit kids who like a bit of detail. Give the shell warm orange and brown swirls, and pick bright red or purple for the caps so the snail pops against green ferns. Download the free PDF for a screen-free activity at home. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big mushroom caps and spots: color the large cap and the two smaller caps tomato red, leaving the round spots white.
- 2Fill the mushroom stems and the ring on the right mushroom with pale cream, leaving a little white highlight along the edges.
- 3Color the gills under the big cap with light tan and pale beige, then add the snail shell in warm brown and its body in golden yellow.
- 4Cover the ferns with light green and yellow green, adding dark green on the darker fronds and curls for depth.
- 5Finish the leaves at the bottom with yellow green and dark green, and add dark green grass blades around the mushroom bases.
- 6Optional: Add a little charcoal gray under the bottom leaf for a soft shadow, and leave the background white.
