Coloring guide

Two birds of prey sit on bare tree branches in this detailed line drawing. The upper bird faces left with its head turned slightly, showing a hooked beak, a dark round eye and a chest covered in short feathery strokes. The lower bird is in front, facing right, with layered rows of scalloped wing feathers and a long tapered tail that points down toward the bottom left corner. Its feet grip a thick branch. Clusters of oval leaves with center veins fill the lower left and right sides, and thin twigs reach across the open sky. The feather texture gives lots of small areas to shade. Try colored pencils in warm browns, tans and creams, and layer darker tones on the wing rows so each scallop stands out. It also works well for a lesson on birds of prey and how their curved beaks and strong feet help them hunt.
