Sitting on the edge of a wooden dock with boots dangling over the water, a smiling child in a pointed hood and short cape holds a bent fishing rod. A fish leaps up at the end of the line, sending up droplets and ripples. The child wears a small belt pouch, rolled-up sleeves and cuffed boots, which are fun to color. Cattails and tall grass sit in the corners, with lily pads and a blooming water lily, a calm lake, and rounded hills and mountains far off. Big shapes work for younger kids, and ripples, scales and reeds give older kids small details. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big sky areas and the lake in sky blue, and paint the far mountains in pale blue, leaving the fishing rod area and the sky near the line white.
- 2Color the bushes, the hedges and the grassy reeds in grass green, adding forest green to the darker shadows along the lake edge and the tall grass.
- 3Fill the wooden dock, the posts and the cattails with caramel and chocolate brown, using rust brown for the darker cattail heads and the planks.
- 4Color the boy's hood and cape in bright red, the collar in brick red, the sleeves and jacket in grass green, and the pants and boots in chocolate brown with light tan cuffs.
- 5Add peach to the face and hands, color the hair brown, and fill the fish body with cream and its tail with orange. Paint the lotus flower in pink and the lily pads in mint green.
- 6Optional: add a little darker shading under the hood, along the dock edges and beneath the lily pads to make the scene pop.
