Zazu the hornbill takes center stage in this lively line drawing, with his big curved beak wide open as if he's squawking or scolding someone. His eyes roll upward with a heavy-lidded, exasperated look, and a few small feathers poke up on top of his head. The wings fold across his chest, and the feather tips look like little fingers. Three long tail feathers sweep up and out to the right, each with a rounded band near the tip. His scaly legs and wide, flat feet are planted firmly at the bottom. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big body and wing areas: color the main body feathers, wing top and lower wing feathers in bright blue.
- 2Fill the long tail feathers and their tips with bright blue and deep blue, leaving the thin cream band on the big tail feather white or pale cream.
- 3Color the upper beak and feet in burnt orange, and the lower beak in tangerine.
- 4Use golden yellow for the beak stripe, and lemon yellow for the face, neck and belly area.
- 5Add the open mouth in crimson red and the tongue in coral pink, leaving the eye white bright white.
- 6Finish with the small details: the head crest in bright blue, the pale cream cheek feather, and the darker tips of the wing feathers in deep blue. Optional: add a little darker shading along the edges of the feathers for depth.
