Little Penguin Watching the Northern Lights Shimmer Over the Sea

A round-cheeked little penguin sits on a snowy mound, flippers at its sides and big eyes tipped up to the sky, where wavy ribbons of northern lights swirl overhead. Calm water behind it holds a few flat floating ice chunks, and rugged icebergs or rocky peaks rise on the left and right. A crescent moon and lots of stars, from tiny dots to four-pointed sparkles, fill the night, and small leafy sprigs poke out of the snow up front. The wide aurora stripes are easy to fill in, while the stars and ice give older kids smaller spots to work on. Layer green, teal and purple in the aurora bands against a deep blue sky, and keep the penguin's belly white so it glows. A free printable for a quiet afternoon at home or in class. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Color the penguin's back, head and wings with charcoal, leaving the face and belly untouched.
- 2Fill the penguin's belly and face with cream white, then color the feet and beak orange, keeping the eye whites bright white.
- 3Color the sea with ocean blue and the floating ice pieces with pale sky blue, leaving the ice highlights white.
- 4Fill the snowy hills and the ice mountains with ice blue and steel blue, keeping the snow patches white.
- 5Color the aurora ribbons by alternating stripes of aqua mint, lavender purple, light green, periwinkle blue and turquoise to make them shimmer.
- 6Optional: Add a little darker shading with stone gray along the penguin's back and the edges of the ice for depth.
