Hatching Baby Snake in a Straw Nest

Coloring guide
Popping out of a cracked eggshell, this smiling baby snake flicks its tongue and looks around with big round eyes full of wonder. Its body wraps in a loop inside the shell, with a spotted section and a pointed tail tip curling up on the left. Simple belly stripes show on the neck, and the jagged edges of the broken shell frame it well. The egg rests in a nest of long, crisscrossing straw or grass blades. Lines are bold and clean with lots of open space, so crayons or markers work well for preschoolers and early elementary kids. Soft greens for the snake, bright yellow or orange for the round spots, and warm tan and brown for the nest all fit. This free printable also suits a spring or baby animals theme at home or in class. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big snake head, neck, and tail in grass green, leaving the eye whites and little shine dots white.
- 2Color the snake belly bands and the neck section in soft yellow, filling each stripe carefully.
- 3Add the lemon yellow spots on the tail and along the neck, keeping them round and bold.
- 4Fill the straw nest at the bottom with warm brown and honey gold, alternating colors so the strands look layered.
- 5Color the tongue and the inside of the mouth in coral pink, and leave the broken eggshell and the egg base cream white.
- 6Optional: Add a little darker green along one side of the head and body to give the snake some shading.
