A wide-eyed barn owl stands on a wooden fence post and looks right at you with its heart-shaped face. The wing is folded against the body in rows of scalloped feathers, and small speckles dot the chest. Behind it is a quiet countryside night, with a crescent moon and three little stars above, a barn and silo on a grassy hill, rounded bushes and a rail fence running across the field. Tufts of grass and leafy plants fill the foreground. Feather scallops and fence wood grain are good practice for small spaces, while the big face and sky are easy to fill. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Color the big grassy fields and the lawn in front of the fence with fresh green, and the hills behind the fence too.
- 2Fill the bushes and the grass tufts at the corners with forest green, then color the barn walls and roof barn red.
- 3Color the silo pale gray with its darker top in dark gray, and fill the barn window with sky blue.
- 4Color the owl's wings, the top of its head and the tail with caramel brown and wheat tan, leaving the face disc white.
- 5Color the fence rails and the wooden post in warm brown, and fill the owl's belly with warm cream.
- 6Finish with the beak, feet, claws and the star in golden yellow. Optional: add a few darker strokes of warm brown along the wing feathers to add depth.
