The heart of this page is a big hug. A smiling little vampire boy with pointy ears, tiny fangs and a swoop of hair holds a cheerful baby bat close. The bat has its eyes squeezed shut in a giggle, a small open mouth, one fang showing and wide wings spread out behind it. The boy wears a high-collared cape, a short jacket, long pants and round-toed shoes. Three outlined stars float in the background, one at the top left and two on the right. Thick, clean lines and roomy spaces keep things easy for young children and beginners. Deep purple or midnight blue works for the cape, a soft gray-brown suits the bat, and yellow stars will pop. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the vampire boy's face, ears and hand in light peach, leaving the two big eye whites bright white.
- 2Color the hair dark brown, then fill the pants, the jacket panel and the vampire's sleeve in charcoal gray.
- 3Color the cape cherry red, its collar and clasp charcoal gray, and the cape's lower right corner in cherry red as well.
- 4Fill the bat's head, body, feet and ear tips in periwinkle blue, then color both wings muted purple.
- 5Add soft pink inside the bat's ears and on its nose, make the two stars golden yellow, and fill the open mouths dark maroon.
- 6Optional: add a few darker strokes of charcoal gray on the cape and pants to give them a bit of shadow.
