Reading a Letter Next to an Owl, a Harry Potter Moment

A boy with messy, tousled hair and round glasses stands at the left of the frame, looking to the side at a square card or letter in his hand. He wears a zip-up jacket with a high collar and stripes along the sleeves, over a crew neck shirt. On the right, a wide-eyed owl with textured feathers perches close by, its talons gripping a bundle of fabric. A wooden frame or window edge runs around the scene. The big jacket sections are easy to color, and the owl's feathers give older kids small areas for detail. Try warm browns, tans and creams on the owl, then pick a bold jacket color so the boy stands out. It also works well as a prompt for a short story about who sent the letter and what it says.
