Four smiling insect friends gather around a big leaf for a picnic in the garden. A bee with little wings sits in the middle holding a snack, a spotted ladybug on the left nibbles a treat, a butterfly with patterned wings sits on the right, and a small ant up front munches a cookie. On the leaf there's a bowl of strawberries, a bowl of blueberries, a small cake topped with a berry, some loose strawberries and a few crumbs. Tall grass, daisies, bluebells, small blossoms and a spotted mushroom frame the picnic. Red for the strawberries and ladybug and yellow for the bee's stripes is an easy place to start. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big picnic leaf and the leaves around it in grass green, leaving the daisies and background grass white.
- 2Color the ladybug shell and the mushroom cap bright red, and leave the black spots and the mushroom dots as they are.
- 3Fill the bee's body, the butterfly's big wings and the bee's legs with sunny yellow, and use mustard yellow on the upper butterfly wing.
- 4Paint the bee's wings and the inner butterfly wing in pale sky blue, then color the ant's head and abdomen lime green and the lilac bug's head and arm soft lilac.
- 5Add the cake frosting in bubblegum pink, the berry bowl in chocolate brown, the bell flowers in lavender purple, and the ladybug face and mushroom stem in pale cream.
- 6Optional: add a little dark brown to the bee's legs and forest green to the grass edges and the leaf stems for a little depth.
