A floppy-eared bunny and a little kitten sit side by side behind a big birthday cake with five lit candles, so it makes a sweet pick for a party table or classroom celebration. The bunny has a large bow at its neck. The kitten wears a bow too and holds a wrapped present with a ribbon on top. Both have round, shiny eyes, and the bottoms of their feet show little paw pads. The two-tier cake has scalloped frosting, a row of hearts and dots around the middle, and a round plate underneath. Patterned bunting flags hang across the top, with stripes, dots and circles to fill in. Pink and purple work well for the cake hearts, and a bright yellow-orange for the candle flames. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big body shapes: color the bunny's body, ears and paws warm brown, and the kitten's head, arms and tail light gray. Leave the bunny's white head and the kitten's eyes and nose area white.
- 2Fill the cake next: use cream for the middle and bottom tiers and light pink for the top frosting, then add rose pink to the cake band with the cherry red hearts.
- 3Color the cake plate sky blue and add the rounded frosting bumps in rose pink, blush pink and hot pink along the top edge of the cake.
- 4Color the gift box cherry red with golden yellow ribbons, then paint the bunny's bow bright blue and the kitten's bow golden yellow.
- 5Color the candles with stripes, leaving the white stripes uncolored and using grass green, amber, violet, lavender, lilac and pale blue for the other stripes.
- 6Finish with the pennant flags: alternate sky blue, golden yellow and hot pink triangles across the top. Optional: add light shading on the bunny's ears and the kitten's tail for a soft, rounded look.
