Catching a Gumball Candy from the Machine

On top of a classic gumball machine sits a big round glass globe packed with about eighteen shiny gumballs. Every ball has a little curved highlight, and the globe has a tall glare stripe down the left side. A dome lid with a round knob finishes the top. Below the globe, the base has a round coin slot in the middle and a small chute where one gumball has just rolled out. A child's hand with a sleeve cuff at the wrist reaches in from the lower right, palm open, to catch it. Pink, blue, green, yellow and orange make a good rainbow for the gumballs, and red on the base and lid will help the candy stand out. Download the free PDF for a classroom project or weekend craft. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big glass globe and the lid: fill the glass background with pale blue, leaving the curved shine on the left side white, and color the lid and knob red.
- 2Color the whole machine body, its collar ring, base and the sleeve of the arm in red, and fill the sleeve cuff with bright blue.
- 3Fill the gumballs in the globe with a mix of colors: bright blue, bright green, dark green, pink, orange, purple and yellow, spreading the colors so no two of the same shade touch.
- 4Color the round dial in the middle of the machine light gray, then the chute arch and its ends in dark gray, and add the dial center and handles in light gray.
- 5Paint the hand in peach and color the falling gumball in bright blue, leaving the small white shine spots on each gumball untouched.
- 6Optional: Add a little darker shading along the edges of the gumballs and the red body to make the machine look rounder.
