Crayola is an American company of the Hallmark Cards group specialized in the creation of wax crayons. The original company, Binney and Smith, was founded by Edwin Binney and C. Harold Smith in 1885. They produce industrial dyes1. The company won gold medals in Paris and Saint-Louis at the Universal Expositions2,3. By 1903, they had begun to produce wax crayons. Their chalk is the first not to be toxic and the first to have bright colours4. The original box contains eight colours (blue, green, red, red, yellow, black, brown, orange and purple). After the Second World War, Crayola introduced a box of 48 colours and a box of 64 colours. They introduced markers in 1978, coloured pencils in 1987, and a box of 120 colours in 1998. Their products are available worldwide. In 2003, Crayola built a huge chalk, 4.5 m long and weighing 700 kg.

1900 - The company began manufacturing slate pencils in its brand new Easton, Pennsylvania facility located in Bushkill Creek.
1903 - The first box of Crayola crayons comes off the production line, it is sold for $0.05.
1904 - Crayola wins a gold medal at the St Lou World Fair for his dust-free chalk.
1958 - Launch of the 64-colour Crayola pencil box with integrated pencil sharpener.
1978 - Binney & Smith goes public on June 19 in New York with the symbol: BYS. Crayola celebrates its 75th anniversary and launches the Crayola markers. DIY kits are becoming more and more important to society.
1984 - Crayola becomes a 100% subsidiary of Hallmark Cards.
1987 - Crayola launches the washable markers and Crayola coloured pencils.
1996 - The 100 billionth Crayola wax crayon leaves the production line in Easton, Pennsylvania. Creation of the Crayola Experience Park.
2007 - The company is renamed Crayola.
2010 - Opening of the 1st part of the 20-hectare solar farm on the Forks Township Campus, PA.
2011 - Edwin Binney enters the Hall of Fame National of American Inventors.
2013 - The "Crayola Experience" park is completely renewed with interactive attractions.
