Front and center, a big-eyed owl perches on a slim branch with its feet curled over the wood and its small beak tilted into a happy smile. Rounded scallops cover the chest, the feathers on top of the head and the folded wings, so there are plenty of small sections for little colorers to fill. Tufted ears and round glossy eyes add some sweet detail. An oval frame of pointed leaves and tiny circles surrounds the owl, and a few more leaves grow off the branch near the bottom. Kids who enjoy a mix of larger spaces and fine patterns will like it, and it prints cleanly for free. Warm browns and tans suit the scalloped feathers, and soft greens on the leaves give it a calm woodland feel. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the leaves: color all the leaf shapes, the top, side and bottom leaves, in leaf green.
- 2Fill the wings and the tree branch with light brown for the wings and dark brown for the branch and the tail at the bottom.
- 3Color the face area in cream, leaving the two big eye whites bright white. Add golden yellow to the beak and the feet gripping the branch.
- 4Fill the chest and belly scales with a mix of golden yellow, orange, amber, and a few coral red scales, working from the top down.
- 5Optional: Add a little extra shading in darker light brown along the edges of the wing feathers to make them pop.
