A big-eyed baby owl perches on a leafy branch, little claws curled over the wood, staring right back at you. The round face has a heart-shaped outline, two tufted ears and a tiny pointed beak. Feather lines mark the folded wings, and the belly is covered in scalloped rows you can color one at a time. A crescent moon floats in the upper right, and leaves grow from branches at the top left and bottom right. Thick outlines and roomy open spaces make it easy for preschoolers and early elementary kids. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the owl's face and head using cream beige, coloring the big rounded shape and the feathery tufts on top.
- 2Fill the owl's wings, the tail feathers below the branch, and the long branch with warm brown, leaving the feather lines as separate sections.
- 3Color the two leaves on the upper left, the leaves on the right side, and the bottom right leaves with leaf green.
- 4Add the beak and the owl's three-toed feet with golden yellow, keeping the small gaps between toes white.
- 5Leave the big eye whites and their small shine spots white, then fill the dark pupils with black or dark brown.
- 6Optional: Add a little darker brown along the edges of the wings and branch to make the drawing look more rounded.
