In this underwater scene, a cheerful fish with a big round eye and a friendly smile swims along, and half of its body is drawn as a skeleton with curved rib bones, a spine and a fanned tail fin. Bubbles in different sizes float up around it. Down on the sandy seabed you'll find a smiling starfish with dotted arms, a ridged scallop shell and a spiral snail shell, with tall wavy seaweed on both sides. Large open spaces and bold outlines are easy for small hands, and the bones give curious kids a gentle, not-spooky peek at anatomy. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Fill the fish head and lower fin with bright yellow, leaving the eye white and the shine on the eye untouched.
- 2Color the backbone and the ribs with soft yellow, then add cream on the pale rib highlights so they stay light.
- 3Paint the tail with deep orange and tangerine orange, and color the top fin and starfish body with warm orange.
- 4Color the seaweed with grass green, lime green, light green and pale mint, then fill the bubbles with sky blue.
- 5Add lavender, orchid pink and violet purple to the shells, sandy tan to the pebbles and coral pink to the fish mouth and starfish mouth.
- 6Optional: add a few darker strokes in the same color along the edges of the fins and shells for a little depth.
