In this underwater scene, four round, smiling fish swim in a loose circle around one big shiny bubble. Each has large eyes, a happy grin, flowing fins and a tail, and a body covered in rows of small scallop-shaped scales. Dozens of little bubbles in different sizes float between them. Tall wavy seaweed grows along both sides, and clumps of leafy plants sit on small rocks along the bottom. Scales, fins and leaves give older kids who like finer detail and steady pencil work lots to do. You could give each fish its own color, like orange, turquoise, yellow and purple, and alternate two shades across the scales for a patterned look. Light blue or plain white works for the bubbles. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Color the fish faces and the small mouths area with lemon yellow, leaving the eye whites white.
- 2Fill the fish scales with golden yellow, warm amber and a few patches of tangerine orange and deep orange for a mixed look.
- 3Color the fins and tails with tangerine orange and deep orange, leaving the thin fin lines white.
- 4Paint the big bubble and the small bubbles with sky blue, leaving the shine spots white.
- 5Color the seaweed with leaf green and lime green, then fill the rocks at the bottom with light gray.
- 6Optional: Add a little darker shading along the bottom edges of the scales to make the fish look rounder.
