With his tall pointed hat, fluffy beard and curly mustache, this smiling gnome leans into a wheelbarrow stacked with three plump pumpkins. He's in boots and a long-sleeved tunic, gripping the handles as he heads down a path of oval stepping stones. His vegetable garden is neat and busy: a tomato plant heavy with round tomatoes on the left, rows of carrots with leafy tops, and a few cabbages on the right. A wooden picket fence and rounded bushes fill in behind. The pumpkins have ridged sides and curly stems, which are good for practicing shading. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the gnome's face, hands and ears in light peach, leaving the big white beard and the mustache white.
- 2Color the pointed hat, the wheelbarrow body, its front rim, the wheel hub and the tomatoes in tomato red.
- 3Fill the big pumpkins and the smaller ones behind them in pumpkin orange, leaving small gaps so the shapes stay clear.
- 4Color the shirt and sleeves in bright blue, the pants in leafy green, and the boots and wheelbarrow handle in dark brown or caramel brown.
- 5Add leafy green to the tomato leaves and bushes, light green to the cabbages and carrot tops, and dark brown to the soil rows, keeping the fence white.
- 6Optional: Add a little darker shade along one side of each pumpkin and the hat for depth.
