Perched upright on a simple branch and gripping it with little toes, this big-eyed owl is covered in pattern. The round head has scalloped feathers across the top and two tufted ears. Its large circular eyes have solid black pupils, sitting above a small diamond-shaped beak. Rows of rounded, overlapping feathers cover the belly, and each folded wing is split into pointed sections with triangle accents. Two leaf shapes hang from each end of the branch. With its mix of small and medium spaces, it suits kids who like careful coloring, and it makes a nice free printable for a quiet afternoon. Warm browns and oranges look good on the belly scallops, and alternating teal and purple in the wing triangles makes the pattern stand out. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the wings: color the feather triangles on both sides teal blue, leaving the spaces between them for orange.
- 2Fill the scalloped feathers on the belly with a mix of bright orange, marigold and golden yellow, and use warm brown for the center rows.
- 3Color the head feathers and ear tufts with bright orange, coral red and apricot, then fill the eye rings and beak with golden yellow.
- 4Leave the big round eye whites and the small shine dots white, and fill the pupils with a dark color if you like.
- 5Color the branch and the claws with warm brown and golden yellow, then fill the leaves with leaf green.
- 6Optional: add light texture lines inside the feathers with a slightly darker shade of each color for a stained-glass look.
