Coloring guide
Only the left half of a smiling butterfly is drawn on this page. The right half is a blank grid waiting for kids to fill in. The butterfly has a round head with one big eye, a curved antenna with a ball on the tip, and a striped body. The wing is made of an upper and a lower section, each with a large teardrop-shaped petal pattern and a column of different-sized circles along the edge. Down in the bottom corners are two small flowers with leafy grass tufts. Children can copy the design square by square to practice symmetry, then color it in. Bright orange and yellow suit the wing petals, with purple dots around the edges and pink flowers. It's free to print for the classroom or a rainy day. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start by coloring the grass patches at the bottom left and bottom right in grass green, leaving the flowers white.
- 2Color the thin outer edge along the top of the upper wing in orchid purple.
- 3Fill the main upper wing area with golden yellow, and color the big spot at the top of the wing golden yellow too, keeping the smaller dots white.
- 4Fill the lower wing section with pale yellow so it sits softly next to the golden upper wing.
- 5Color the round head in tangerine orange, leaving the eye white and the small shine in the eye white.
- 6Optional: Add a little extra shading along the edges of the wings with a slightly darker shade of the same colors for depth.
