A wide-eyed horned owl sits on a thick, gnarled branch with its feathered ear tufts standing tall and its talons curled over the bark. The chest and wings are full of layered feather patterns, so kids who love detail will be happy. Behind the owl, a large cratered full moon glows next to a few puffy clouds, with rolling mountains, a small lake and rows of pine trees in the distance. A big knotted trunk with swirling bark runs down the left side, and leafy branches and hanging vines frame the top and corners. Warm browns, tans and soft oranges suit the feathers, deep green the pines, and pale yellow the moon so it stands out. Print the sheet at home for a quick coloring break any time. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the sky: color the background around the owl and the moon area in sky blue, leaving the clouds white.
- 2Fill the owl's face, chest and belly with light beige, then add cream around the beak and under the eyes.
- 3Color the wings and tree trunk with caramel brown and amber, using dark brown for the deepest shadows along the feathers.
- 4Add the forest in the lower right with forest green and leaf green, then fill the hills with bright green and the distant mountain with slate blue.
- 5Finish with the golden beak and claws, the pale yellow moon, and the lime green and dark teal leaves. Optional: add a few darker strokes on the wings for depth.
