A friendly horse with big sparkling eyes and a wavy, flowing mane leans over the top of a wooden stable door and smiles right at you. The open upper half of the door frames its head, and you can see a fence and a puffy bush or tree outside. The closed lower door has a diagonal brace, a metal hinge on one side and a latch on the other. Down at the bottom, an apple with a leaf sits beside a tied hay bale drawn with scratchy straw lines, and little tufts of grass poke out at the corners. The large shapes on the horse's face and the planks are easy for little hands, and the hay adds detail for older kids. Chestnut brown suits the horse, golden yellow the hay, and red the apple. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the red barn siding on both sides of the picture using barn red, and fill the apple with apple red.
- 2Color the horse's face, neck and the stall door planks with caramel brown, and use honey brown for the top rail, the cross board and the bottom boards.
- 3Fill the horse's mane, forelock and the hay bales with golden yellow, and give the inside of the ears a soft pink touch.
- 4Color the stall wall behind the horse, the rails and the top beam with dark brown, then add grass green to the bush and the apple leaf.
- 5Fill the metal hinges and latch with steel gray and medium gray, and color the stable post with pale tan or leave it cream white.
- 6Optional: add a little extra caramel brown along the door planks and under the mane for a bit of depth.
