Perched across the top of a big, rounded capital H is a wide-eyed baby owl, its little feet gripping the crossbar. The owl has large round eyes, ear tufts, a small beak, and scalloped feathers on its chest and wings. Overhead, a big crescent moon and five outlined stars in different sizes fill the night sky. The H itself stands on a gently curved hill, with grass tufts and puffy bushes on both sides. Thick, clear outlines help small hands stay inside the lines. Soft browns and tans suit the owl, bright yellow works for the moon and stars, and a bold color will make the H pop. Free to print, and great for letter practice (H for hoot) at home or in class. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Fill the big letter H with sky blue, leaving the open space at the bottom of the letter white.
- 2Color the owl's belly and the inner part of its face cream, keeping the eye whites bright white.
- 3Color the owl's head tufts, wings and the edges of its face light brown.
- 4Color both owl feet dark brown so they stand out against the branch of the H.
- 5Fill the five stars and the small star near the top with golden yellow.
- 6Color the bushes and grass tufts grass green, leaving the background white. Optional: add a little darker shading under the owl's wings and along the H for depth.
