A big, smiling mother chameleon rests on a curved tree branch and looks down at three baby chameleons lined up next to her, all staring up with wide, round eyes. She has a spotted body, a ridged crest and a tail that spirals below the branch. Each baby has its own small spiral tail hanging down and a few little spots on its back. Leafy branches arch across the top of the page, and a bunch of round berries hangs on the right. Clean lines and large shapes make it a good match for preschoolers and early elementary kids using crayons or markers. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start by filling the big chameleon's head, body, arms and legs, plus the three baby chameleons, with lime green, leaving the eye whites and small highlights white.
- 2Color the curled tail and the small spirals under the branch in forest green, then add a little lime green to the lighter parts of the tail.
- 3Paint the curved branch and the twigs with warm brown, using side-to-side strokes to suggest bark.
- 4Fill the leaves with forest green and color the three berries bright red, keeping the background white.
- 5Add golden yellow spots on the adult's body and the babies, use yellow green for the babies' side patches, and give the head crest a pale lime touch.
- 6Optional: add a darker green shadow along the underside of the bodies and branch to make the family look more rounded.
