Marigold Crown Sugar Skull with Flower Petal Eyes

On top of this smiling sugar skull sits a big crown made of three round, layered blooms, with pointed leaves tucked in around them. There's a lot to color here. The large round eyes have shiny highlights and are ringed by scalloped flower petals. Below them is a small heart-shaped nose and a wide grin of square teeth. Swirly teardrop designs decorate the forehead, with a single dot above. Two little flowers and scattered dots dress up the cheeks, and curling flourishes run along the jaw and chin. The linework is bold and clean, so it suits kids who like to take their time as well as older children who enjoy fine detail. Warm orange and golden yellow work well on the flower crown, and bright pink, turquoise and purple would stand out on the eye petals and cheek flowers. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start by filling the crown flowers with golden yellow, leaving the small centers for later.
- 2Color the big leaves around the flowers with leaf green, and the skull face with a soft cream.
- 3Fill the outer petals of the crown flowers with deep orange and light orange, adding a touch of tangerine near the centers.
- 4Color the eye petals with bubblegum pink, and paint the nose and forehead teardrop with bright red.
- 5Use sky blue for the two eyebrows and dark red for the flower centers, keeping the eye whites and teeth white.
- 6Optional: Add a little shading along the edges of the petals and the skull to make the drawing pop.
