A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.

1. 1Color the hen's body and wings with chestnut brown, leaving the wing outlines dark and adding simple feather lines.
2. 2Fill the chicks with lemon yellow, keeping the small eye whites and the little white highlight on each chick white.
3. 3Color the hen's chest feathers and cheek area with beige, then fill the comb and wattle with coral red.
4. 4Use orange for the hen's beak and feet, and fill the fence posts and rails with oak brown.
5. 5Color the grass patches with grass green, and leave the flower petals, flower centers and background white.
6. 6Optional: Add a little darker brown shading under the wings and belly to give the hen more depth.
