The heart of this page is the sweet eye contact: a big penguin bends her head down toward a fluffy little chick looking up at her. The adult has a smooth rounded body, a long flipper along her side and a gently curved beak that nearly touches the chick's tiny one. The baby has soft feathery edges, a round eye and a small wing tucked in. They share a chunky patch of ice with small snowy mounds on each side and a few vertical lines along the front edge. Bold, clean outlines help preschoolers and early elementary kids who are still building crayon control. Soft gray works for the chick's fluffy coat, black for the adult's back, and bright orange for both beaks and feet. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the ice floe at the bottom: fill it with pale sky blue, and leave the snow bumps and hills white.
- 2Fill the chick's round body and head with light gray, keeping the chick's eye whites and the dark outlines untouched.
- 3Color the mama penguin's back, tail and long flipper with dark slate gray, leaving her white belly and neck strip as they are.
- 4Add medium gray to the chick's inner flipper on its left side so it stands out from the body.
- 5Paint both penguin beaks and all four feet with warm orange, filling the mama's beak and the chick's small beak as well.
- 6Optional: Add a few light strokes of darker tone along the edges of the gray areas for a soft, shaded look.
