Three Owl Chicks with Mom and Dad on a Branch

Two big owls sit shoulder to shoulder on a thick tree branch, with three fluffy babies tucked in front. Every one of them looks straight out with wide, round eyes. The owl on the left has eyelashes, and both parents have tufted ears, scalloped tummy feathers and detailed wings folded at their sides. The chicks come in different sizes: the smallest is on the far left and a taller one stands on the right. A crescent moon hangs overhead, and leafy twigs frame the top and bottom corners. Big shapes are easy for small hands, and the feather scallops give older kids something to chew on. Warm browns and tan suit the feathers, and soft yellow suits the moon. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Fill the big owl faces, bodies, and the little chicks' faces and bodies with cream beige, keeping the large eye whites white.
- 2Color the mom owl's left wing and lower wing caramel brown, and the dad owl's right wing warm gray.
- 3Paint the main tree branch and the twigs chocolate brown, then fill the leaves with leaf green.
- 4Color the crescent moon, both owl beaks, and the chicks' feet golden yellow, leaving the middle chick's feet white.
- 5Give the chicks their color: sky blue on the left chick's head and wing, lavender purple on the middle chick's head and wing, and soft pink on the right chick's wing.
- 6Optional: Add a little shading with a slightly darker shade of each color along the edges of the wings and branch for more depth.
