Coloring guide
A big wide-eyed owl perches on a tree branch here, and its feathered wings, round chest and tail are split into small sections. Each section has a simple sum in it, like 2+1, 3+2 or 1+3. The key at the bottom matches answers to crayons: 2, 3, 4 and 5. Kids solve each problem and color the section with the matching crayon. Around the owl there's a tall tree trunk with leaves, puffy clouds, three stars, a round moon or sun, pine trees, bushes and a winding stream. Two flowers and a few more leaves run along the bottom. Warm browns and tans suit the feathers, yellow works for the big eyes, and soft blues for the clouds. This free printable PDF leaves room for a few extra copies. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big background: color the tree trunk and branch in caramel brown, then the leaves and bushes in leaf green and forest green, and the stream in sky blue.
- 2Color the owl's face and wing edges with pale peach, and use light caramel on the lighter wing feathers, leaving the big eye rings cream white.
- 3Fill the owl's chest and belly feathers with caramel brown, burnt orange and chocolate brown, working in rows so the pattern looks varied.
- 4Color the owl's feet and some wing tips golden yellow and amber orange, then add chocolate brown to the tail feathers and lower wing tips.
- 5Keep the clouds, the number box and the background gaps white, then add light green touches to the smaller leaves and bushes for a fresh finish.
- 6Optional: add a little darker shading under the owl's wings and inside the bushes for depth.
