This wide-eyed owl wears big round glasses and perches on a stack of three closed books. One wing holds a sharpened pencil up, as if it's about to write something. Its feet grip the top book, its chest is covered in scalloped feather lines, and it has tufted feathers on its head and a small pointed beak. Leafy branches curl up on both sides of the stack and leave a few small spaces to fill. The large shapes and bold outlines are friendly for young children, and the glasses and pencil give older kids a bit more to work on. Soft brown and tan suit the feathers, and a different bright color for each book spine makes the stack stand out. Two shades of green on the leaves would finish it off. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Fill the owl's head, both wings, the side feathers and the hand holding the pencil with warm brown, leaving the eye areas and beak for later.
- 2Color the owl's belly and the pencil tip light tan, then fill the beak with lemon yellow and add a small olive brown tip at the bottom.
- 3Color the top book royal blue, the middle book cherry red and the bottom book leaf green, keeping the page edges ivory.
- 4Color the book bands and the pencil's stripe and ferrule with lemon yellow, and fill the pencil body with golden yellow, adding a rose pink eraser.
- 5Color the owl's feet golden yellow, the glasses frames sky blue and all the leaves leaf green, keeping the eye whites, pupil shines and the thin branch white.
- 6Optional: add a little rust brown shading along the owl's side feathers and the lower edges of the books for extra depth.
