Cliff Diving Penguins Splashing into Icy Water

One small penguin waits at the edge of a tall, chunky ice cliff and watches two friends jump. The first diver is upside down in mid-air with flippers swept back and a big grin. The second is nearly at the water, with droplets and ripples bursting up around its beak. Flat, hexagon-shaped chunks of ice float on the water, and a low snowy hill sits on the far horizon. Clean lines and large shapes keep it easy for younger kids, while the angular cracks in the cliff and the splash give older kids more to do. Icy blues and soft teals are good for the water and cliff, and white bellies on the penguins help them stand out. You may want to print a few extra copies, since it's free. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the penguins: fill the upper and lower diving penguins and the standing penguin's body with charcoal blue, leaving the white bellies and eye whites untouched.
- 2Color the tail feathers and the small wing tips of the diving penguins with steel gray, and paint the orange-tipped feet of the lower penguin with golden yellow.
- 3Fill the cliff with bright sky blue on the darker side faces and pale ice blue on the lighter faces, so the ice looks like it catches the light.
- 4Add aqua blue to the splashes and to the small floes and the large floe in the foreground, keeping the snowy tops of the floes and the cliff white.
- 5Finish with the water: color the small splashes in aqua blue, and leave the distant iceberg and the eye whites white. Optional: Add a little extra steel gray to the penguin bodies for a soft shadow.
