Ocean Mandala with Starfish and Shells

At the heart of this round mandala is a spiral, nautilus-style shell, with seven smiling starfish circling it. Each starfish has a happy face and a pattern of tiny dots down its arms. Past them comes a ring of ribbed scallop shells, a few of them drawn from slightly different angles. The outer edge is made of wavy, rippling lines, with small bubble circles scattered around the border. Thick outlines and open spaces keep it easy for kids, and older children can dig into the repeating shells and the spiral center. Soft pinks, corals and sandy yellows look good on the shells, while orange or purple starfish will pop against the scallops. Blues and greens fit the wavy border nicely. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Fill the wide sandy ring behind the shells and between the starfish with pale sand, leaving the shells themselves for later.
- 2Color the round inner sea area with turquoise, and the outer wavy border with bright sky blue and light sky blue, keeping the bubbles white.
- 3Color each starfish bright orange, leaving the small eyes and their white shine spots uncolored.
- 4Fill the spiral shell with ocean blue, pale aqua, and bright sky blue stripes, alternating colors from ring to ring.
- 5Color the scallop shells with tangerine, light pink, rose pink, soft peach, and coral, leaving a few shells mostly white for a fresh look.
- 6Optional: add a darker ocean blue edge along the outer waves for depth.
