Sleepy Fox Curled Up Beneath a Forest Oak

At the foot of a big oak tree, a little fox has rolled into a tight, cozy ball, eyes shut and fluffy tail wrapped around its body. The pointed ears, small dark nose and striped face markings all have bold, clear outlines, and the zigzag tip of the tail is fun to color. Overhead, the thick trunk shows bark lines and a knothole, with scalloped leaf clusters and oak leaves hanging from the branches. A few grass tufts and fallen leaves lie on the ground. Orange works well for the fox, white for the tail tip and chest, and deep browns for the trunk. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big fox body and head in fox orange, leaving the cream chest and muzzle for later.
- 2Color the tree trunk and the tree root on the left in bark brown, then add the knot in light tan.
- 3Fill the leaves at the top and sides of the tree with leafy green, and the grass tufts too.
- 4Color the fallen leaves at the bottom with golden yellow, with one orange leaf near the bottom right.
- 5Fill the fox's cream chest, muzzle, cheek and inner ears in soft cream, keeping the nose and eyes unpainted.
- 6Optional: Add a few darker strokes of bark brown along the trunk for texture and a little shading under the fox.
