Fast asleep and curled into a cozy ball on a thick bed of hay, this little goat has small curved horns and floppy ears. Its eyes are closed, its tiny nose seems to smile, and its front legs are tucked neatly under its chin. The barn behind is drawn with wooden plank walls and a slanted gate beam, and there's an old hanging lantern plus a wooden bucket with metal bands in the straw. With a mix of large areas and finer details, the page works for younger kids with chunky crayons and older kids who like adding texture. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the wooden barn walls, boards and beams in medium brown, leaving the lantern glass white.
- 2Color the goat's fluffy body, tail and front paw in cream white, and the head in soft beige with a pale pink inner ear.
- 3Fill the horns and the bucket with chocolate brown, then add slate gray for the metal band around the bucket and charcoal gray for the top of the lantern.
- 4Color the hay on the floor in golden yellow and pale yellow, using quick strokes that follow the direction of the straw.
- 5Add bright red to the lantern base and band, and light tan to the horn stripes.
- 6Optional: Add a little darker brown to the shadowed sides of the bucket and the goat's leg for depth.
