Sitting upright in the grass with a big open-mouth smile, this chubby baby dragon has a little butterfly perched right on the tip of its nose. It has large shiny eyes, two striped horns, small spikes along its head and back, a belly with curved stripes, and two bat-style wings spread to the sides. Four more butterflies flutter across the top of the page, and daisy-like flowers and grass tufts fill the bottom corners. Thick, clean outlines and roomy shapes work well for younger kids with crayons or chunky markers. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big areas: color the dragon head, body, legs and tail in grass green, leaving the eye whites and the shoulder highlight white.
- 2Fill both large wings with lime green, then color the wing edges and wing tips in grass green.
- 3Color the belly stripes and the lower belly in pale yellow, leaving small gaps between the stripes.
- 4Add the back spikes and the tail spike in deep green, and the tail spike near the tail in forest green.
- 5Paint the horns in golden yellow with tangerine tips, and color the open mouth in coral pink.
- 6Finish the butterflies and flowers: use sky blue, orange, coral pink and bright yellow for the wings, and keep the grass stems and tufts white. Optional: add a little darker shading along the edges of the wings and belly stripes.
