Mouth open in a big grin and wide sparkly eyes aimed right at you, this baby turtle pops up out of a cracked egg. Both little flippers rest on the broken edge of the shell, where jagged cracks run downward. Oval spots decorate the round head, and a honeycomb pattern covers the flippers and shell. Two whole eggs sit behind and beside the hatching one, all tucked into a bumpy mound of sand with small pebbles and dots around it. Bold lines and big shapes make it a good match for preschoolers and early elementary kids. Soft greens suit the head and flippers, and warm tan or cream colors the eggs and sand. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Fill the cracked egg shell, the small front egg and the two back eggs with ivory, leaving the sand around them white.
- 2Color the turtle head and both flippers with lime green, keeping the two eye shine dots white.
- 3Color the belly plate and its jagged lower edge with pale yellow, then fill the big right sand egg edge with golden yellow.
- 4Use forest green for the shoulders and the round spots on the head and cheeks.
- 5Add leaf green to the scute patterns on both flippers and the shoulder edges, then color the tongue bubblegum pink and the small pebbles in the sand sandy brown.
- 6Optional: add a little darker green along the edges of the head and flippers for a bit of depth.
