This friendly butterfly has a big smile, big eyes and curly-tipped antennae, and its wings stretch across the page above three little flowers growing along the bottom. Large teardrop shapes, rows of round circles and wavy outlines fill each wing, so there are lots of small spaces for kids who like detail. The body has a round head, a smooth chest and a striped tummy that tapers to a point. Every flower has five rounded petals, a circle in the middle, a stem and two pointed leaves. Orange and yellow circles on the wings would pop against purple or blue teardrops. Crayons handle the bigger shapes well, while fine-tip markers or colored pencils are better for the small circles. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Fill the large wing panels and the background inside the wings with sky blue, leaving the spots and teardrop shapes for later.
- 2Color the thick outer wing borders and the thin lines along the wing edges near the body with medium purple.
- 3Fill the head, the upper body, the antenna tips, the big flower center and all the round wing spots with bright yellow, leaving the eye whites and the small shine dots white.
- 4Color the long teardrop-shaped wing patches and the small flower petals with light pink, and use hot pink for the big flower petals.
- 5Color the two orange teardrops on the upper and lower wings with orange, then fill the coral pink patch on the lower left wing and the leaves with leaf green. Keep the stems white.
- 6Optional: add a few extra strokes of a darker shade of the same color at the edges of the wings to make the butterfly look more shaded and lively.
