Smiling Butterfly on a Big Summer Sunflower

With a big smile and curly antennae, this butterfly clings to the seed-filled center of a large sunflower. The flower head is packed with tiny round dots and framed by two layers of pointed petals, each with a center line. Circles, scalloped spots and rounded sections decorate the butterfly's wings, so kids get lots of different spaces to fill. A long straight stem runs below the bloom, holding four big leaves with veined, slightly jagged edges. There's no background at all, so the whole sheet is open for your own ideas. Warm yellow and orange petals with a brown center look lovely, and a bright blue or purple butterfly will stand out. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Color all the sunflower petals with sunny yellow, leaving the round center of the flower white.
- 2Fill the leaves and the long stem with leaf green, keeping the small white highlights along the stem.
- 3Color the big butterfly wings with tangerine and vivid orange, using golden amber on the edges.
- 4Color the butterfly body chestnut brown and fill the wing spots with dark brown, leaving the small white dots as they are.
- 5Add the pale yellow on the butterfly head and a little peach orange on the lighter wing sections to finish the look.
- 6Optional: Add a slightly darker green on the lower side of each leaf and a touch of golden amber at the base of the petals for a bit more depth.
