Family Parade with Hearts and Stars: Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Coloring guide
A happy group walks toward you along a sidewalk. At the front, a child in a headband holds a big heart overhead with both arms. A boy in shorts on the left and a curly-haired girl in a skirt on the right each carry a star on a stick. Behind them a woman claps, a man smiles and claps, and a small child lifts a large star high. The background holds a leafy tree, a bush, a little house with a window, and a sun with rays in the sky. The big heart and stars leave roomy spaces for crayons or markers, so this free printable works well for a Martin Luther King Jr. Day lesson on kindness and community. Red for the heart and sunny yellow for the stars will make them stand out from the people. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big shapes: color the top star, left star and right star golden yellow, and fill the large heart red.
- 2Next, color the faces, hands, arms and legs peach skin. Leave the eye whites, the shoes and socks white.
- 3Paint the clothes: the woman's top rose pink, her jeans bright blue, the man's shirt sky blue, his trousers khaki tan, the center child's shirt bright blue and pants dark blue, and the left boy's shirt grass green with khaki tan shorts.
- 4Color the outdoor scene: the tree leaves and grass in grass green, the bushes in leaf green, the tree trunk in light brown, the house walls cream, the roof slate blue gray and the windows sky blue. Leave the path and background light gray or white.
- 5Add the hair: brown for the woman and center child, dark brown for the man, and caramel brown for the girl's curly hair. Finish with orange for the small boy's hair.
- 6Optional: Add a little darker shade along one side of the heart, the stars and the clothes to make the colors pop.
