This young farmer is having a great day. He's grinning wide as he pushes a wheelbarrow heaped with fresh carrots and their leafy green tops. He wears a straw hat with a wide brim, a checkered shirt, overalls with a front pocket, gloves and tall rubber boots. Back on a gentle hill sits a classic barn with a hayloft window and big X-braced doors, with a few round bushes next to it. Little tufts of grass dot the ground. The big shapes and bold lines are friendly for preschoolers and early elementary kids, and the plaid and straw hat give older kids something extra to work on. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big green areas: color the wheelbarrow tub and its rim in emerald green, then the bushes and grass tufts in grass green.
- 2Color the carrots in carrot orange with burnt orange for a few darker tips, and fill the leafy carrot tops in leaf green with a few lime green touches.
- 3Color the overalls in denim blue and the boots and hair in brown, then fill the straw hat with straw yellow and add the hat band in brown.
- 4Color the barn walls and roof trim in barn red, and the door panels in bright red, leaving the center of the door and the roof edge white.
- 5Fill the face and hands in skin peach, the plaid shirt in bright red, and the wheel tire in charcoal gray with golden yellow on the hub. Leave the eyes, the smile highlights and the background white.
- 6Optional: add a little darker shading on the carrots and overalls with a second shade of the same color for more depth.
