Friendly Scarecrow Among the Pumpkins by the Barn

Out in a crowded pumpkin patch, a friendly scarecrow stands with his arms stretched out wide. His floppy wide-brimmed hat has a sunflower on the band. He's got a big smile, a triangle nose, stitched cheeks, and straw sticking out at his hair, sleeves and pant legs. The plaid shirt, overalls with a front pocket, rope belt and two patched knees all give you texture to color. Around him you'll spot big ribbed pumpkins, a bumpy gourd, curling vines, large leaves and small flowers. Farther back are a wooden fence, a barn with a silo, a leafy tree, rolling hills and puffy clouds. There are big shapes for younger kids and fine details for older ones, so it works across a range of ages. Orange pumpkins, a sunny yellow sunflower and red or blue plaid sleeves look great. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big pumpkins in pumpkin orange, coloring the large round pumpkins at the front and sides while leaving thin white lines between them for their ridges.
- 2Color the scarecrow's denim blue overalls, including both legs, the bib, and the pocket, then fill the patches on the right leg with bright yellow.
- 3Fill the face and hands in peach, leaving the eyes and the cloud at the top left white, and color the hat in caramel brown with a bright red band.
- 4Add the green leaves in leaf green and the lighter bushes and grass in lime green or medium green, filling the leaves around the pumpkins.
- 5Color the shirt sleeves in coral pink, the sunflower and striped gourd in golden yellow, and the hat brim in chocolate brown.
- 6Optional: Add a little darker shading in dark brown along the bottom of the pumpkins and under the hat brim to make the scene look richer.
