Arms stretched wide, this cheerful scarecrow has a small chick-like bird sitting on each sleeve. He has a floppy hat with a square patch, a neckerchief knotted at the collar, and patched overalls with two buttons and a stitched front pocket. Straw sticks out from under the hat, from the sleeve ends and from the bottoms of the pant legs. His face has big round eyes, a triangle nose, a happy smile and little stitched cross marks on one cheek. A sun with rays shines in the upper right, and tall wheat stalks and long grass blades fill the lower corners. The large open shapes on the overalls and hat are easy for small hands. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the big blue overalls on the scarecrow's body and legs using denim blue, leaving the straw fringe at the bottom for later.
- 2Color the sleeves and shirt chest in grass green, then fill the bib pocket in soft blue.
- 3Paint the face in peach, add a carrot orange nose, and leave the eye whites and the smile highlights white.
- 4Use caramel brown for the hat brim and crown, and dark brown for the hat band, then add a cherry red patch on the hat.
- 5Fill the neckerchief in cherry red and the two birds in denim blue, keeping the sun rays white between the golden amber and bright yellow strokes.
- 6Optional: Finish with bright yellow for the straw hair, wheat stalks and fringe at the hands and legs, then add a little shading along the edges.
