A friendly sea turtle with big round eyes and a gentle smile glides through the middle of this busy underwater scene. Its shell is divided into large patterned panels, and its flippers are covered in tiny scales and dots. Sunbeams stream down from the surface at the top, and bubbles float by. Around the turtle are striped angelfish, a row of small fish, and two seahorses, one on each side. Down at the bottom, starfish rest among bushy coral, tube sponges, and tall wavy seaweed. Older kids will find lots of small spaces in the reef, and younger ones can start with the big turtle shell. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the background water: color the open water areas and the sun rays near the top using light sky blue and pale aqua.
- 2Fill the turtle's shell plates with caramel brown, working from the top plate outward to the edge plates.
- 3Color the turtle's head, neck, and flippers with lime green and leaf green, leaving the eyes and small shine spots white.
- 4Add the sandy beige and pale gold areas to the seafloor, sand, and lower coral clumps, then use grass green for the seaweed and front flipper patches.
- 5Finish with the fish, seahorses, and starfish in golden yellow, coral orange, and warm gray. Optional: add a few darker shading strokes on the shell edges for depth.
