Right in the middle of this busy underwater scene, a friendly sea turtle with big round eyes and a happy smile glides along with its long flippers stretched wide. Large smooth plates make up the shell, while little hexagon-style scales cover the head and flippers, perfect for coloring one at a time. Several striped tropical fish swim around it, along with a few tiny fish, a small clownfish-style fish and some floating bubbles. The sea floor is crowded with branching coral, a big tree-like coral on the right, tube sponges, wavy seaweed and sea anemones with long curly tentacles. Kids who like detail will enjoy it, and it makes a handy free printable for a classroom ocean unit. Soft greens and golden browns look good on the shell, with bright oranges and yellows on the fish to stand out against the coral. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Color the big shell in chocolate brown, working plate by plate and leaving the thin dark lines untouched.
- 2Fill the head, neck and face area with yellow green, then add the belly and front flippers in butter yellow.
- 3Color the flippers with forest green on the bigger scales and light green on the smaller ones, leaving a few scales white for contrast.
- 4Add the sea plants and corals: seaweed in leaf green and forest green, purple tubes in lavender purple, pink corals in hot pink and light pink, and the orange coral on the right in tangerine orange.
- 5Color the striped fish in bright orange and light orange, keeping the white stripes white, then add the sandy seafloor in peach.
- 6Optional: add light shading with a darker shade of each color on the shell and flippers, and leave the background water white.
