On a rocky bank, a friendly spotted snake sits coiled with its head raised and its forked tongue peeking out. Just below, a smiling frog perches on a lily pad in the water. Blooming water lilies, a closed lily bud, floating lily pads, tall cattails and reeds surround them, and three dragonflies hover overhead. Soft bushes, a tree and rippling water make up the background. The big blob-shaped spots on the snake are good practice for careful coloring, and the simple rounded shapes suit younger kids. Olive green and golden yellow work for the patches, and a bright lime green frog will stand out against the pond. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Start with the water: fill the pond areas around the lily pads and frog with sky blue, and use turquoise for a few spots near the far right edge.
- 2Color the snake's head and neck pale yellow, then fill the coils with apricot and burnt orange, leaving the round spots white.
- 3Paint the frog's body pale yellow and its head and legs yellow green, keeping the highlights white.
- 4Fill the lily pads with lime green and sage green, then color the flower petals rose pink, leaving the lighter petal edges white.
- 5Color the cattails and muddy bank with chestnut brown and tan, the gray rocks with light gray, and the reeds and bushes with grass green and light green.
- 6Optional: add a slightly darker blue along the edges of the water to make the pond feel deeper.
