Sitting upright on a thick branch, this happy little squirrel holds one acorn in both front paws and smiles with its mouth open. Big round eyes, tufted ears, whiskers and a long fluffy tail curling up behind its back give it plenty of personality. Oak leaves and more acorns hang in the corners: two leaves and an acorn at the top left, a leaf and an acorn at the top right, and a pair of acorns with a leaf at the bottom right. Outlines are clean and shapes are big, so preschoolers can handle it, while older kids can add fur texture. Orange-brown fits the squirrel, with cream for the tummy and golden tan on the acorn caps. A suggested order, zone by zone — skip around as you like.
- 1Color the squirrel's fluffy tail, head, body and haunches with warm orange, leaving the small eye whites and the highlights white.
- 2Fill the oak leaves at the top left, bottom and right with leaf green, keeping the light veins on the leaves white.
- 3Color the cream belly and the muzzle area with cream, then add coral pink to the inner ears, nose and mouth.
- 4Shade the branches and acorn nuts with caramel brown, and color the acorn caps and the held acorn with chocolate brown and golden tan.
- 5Optional: Add a little darker orange along the lower edges of the tail and body for depth, and finish by leaving small white highlights in the eyes and acorns.
